The Ministry of Community Development launched the “Social Innovation Platform”, heeding the call of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to concentrate efforts on social innovation to mark UAE Innovation Week 2016.
The Platform seeks to encourage individuals, institutions, and the media, to share their creative and innovative ideas that support social service in the UAE, and to come up with innovative solutions to the challenges that face various community groups. This, in turn, will lead to achieving the objectives of the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda, which seeks to strengthen the values of cohesion within families and the community at large.
The platform – available in both Arabic and English – will pave the way for individuals and organisations in the UAE to share their opinions and innovative ideas to address societal challenges and find real solutions for them. The platform’s objective is to improve services for all segments of society – families, youth, the elderly, people with disabilities, children, etc. – in an effort to harmonise the UAE society and fully integrate all of its components. This is meant to accelerate the implementation of the Ministry’s vision and objectives for a future where the UAE can be considered the “home of happiness”.
The Social Innovation Platform seeks to establish a culture of social innovation as a stepping stone for sustainable development in the UAE and a catalyst for innovative solutions that help communities tackle the challenges that face them. These challenges are different for each group; some communities, for instance, are isolated and unable to successfully adapt to their surroundings – this is especially true for the elderly and people with disabilities, among others.
The platform raises awareness around the potential that these segments have to affect change in society at large. What is more, by getting various segments of society involved, the platform serves to promote concepts and values in society and inspire loyalty and the sense of belonging to the UAE. This serves to consolidate all efforts that aim to tackle challenges and turn them into opportunities that benefit current and future generations of people in the UAE.
The Ministry of Community Development will be reviewing all ideas that come through the Platform and sort them in collaboration with a group of specialists and experts. The best ideas will be implemented as projects, initiatives, or policies that support innovation in the UAE – in collaboration with the Ministry’s partners.
