Dubai Ruler issues law on establishment of MBR Library

Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in his capacity as the Ruler of Dubai, has issued Law No. (14) for the year 2016, relating to the establishment Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library as a public establishment, along with Decree No. (36) for the year 2016 forming the board of directors of  the Establishment of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library, which is in charge of drawing public policies and strategic plans required to achieve the Library objectives. 

The board of directors is headed by H.E. Mohammed Ali Al Murr, and the membership of H.E Hussein Nasser Lootah, as Vice Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Saleem Al-Mazroui, Ibrahim Ahmed Al-Hashmi, Saeed Mohammed Al-Atter Al-Dhahani, Yasser Saeed Hareb Al-Mahiri, Najlaa Saif Al-Shamsi, Jamal Ibrahim Al-Shahi, Isobel Frances, Malik Sultan Al Malik, in addition to the CEO of the Library. 
The Board serves for a renewable term of three years. 

“We want the Library to be a cultural forum and a knowledge incubator for the region,” His Highness said. Sheikh Mohammed also stressed the importance of the Library’s role in contributing in cementing reading and transferring culture into a product of the society. He also directed the board members to start what he called “the cultural construction” of the Library which is set to be the largest Arab knowledge incubator from today, before the completion of the construction of the library. 
“The Library will activate the movement of writing, translating and bringing intellectuals together, as well as spreading a culture of dialogue and tolerance and accepting the other,” He said.
The new law defines the objectives of the Library, which aims to support and enhance the comprehensive strategy of the government in the cultural and knowledge sector, as well as boosting general knowledge in the Arab world, among many other objectives.

Last February, His Highness  launched the Library, which is set to be biggest library in the Arab world. The project cost AED1bn, and extends on area of 1 million square feet, and set to include 1.5 million books serving 42 million person across the region and the world. The Library will also host annually more than 100 cultural and knowledge events.
