HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), met Steve Bolze, Senior Vice President of GE and President & CEO of GE Power, and Joe Anis, President & CEO of GE Power Services Middle East & Africa, at the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul, Turkey. Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Development, and Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources, were also present.
Al Tayer discussed DEWA’s major developments and strategic initiatives with GE, which supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to provide 7% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020, rising to 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050.
DEWAs’ major projects include the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is one of the biggest single-site solar parks in the world based on the Independent Power Producer model. It will generate 1,000MW by 2020 and 5,000MW by 2030.
Al Tayer also talked about the Hassyan clean coal power plant, which is planned to generate 2,400MW, and will be the first of its type in the region, based on world-class standards. He also talked about the expansion of M-Station, at a cost of AED 1.47 billion, the Smart Grid project, and DEWA’s smart initiatives to support Smart Dubai.
Al Tayer met with a delegation of Turkish energy companies and discussed improving bilateral ties on renewable energy and sustainable development. The Turks expressed their interest in participating in DEWA’s projects.
During the meeting, DEWA invited the Turks to take part in its 19th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2017). DEWA organises WETEX under the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and President of DEWA. WETEX will also take place at the same time as the World Green Economy Summit 2017.
