Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum praised the launch of the ‘Hamdan bin Mohammed Initiative for Community Sports’ by Dubai Sports Council in collaboration with ten local government entities and departments in Dubai. The initiative aims to promote sports and physical activity to help enhance happiness and positivity.
“Exercise and physical activity are good for just about everyone, as it helps people stay fit, and happy. Healthy individuals are able to work better and contribute more effectively to society. That’s why sport is one of the key sectors supported by the UAE leadership,” His Highness said.
“The initiative is a quality addition to community sport in Dubai and has the support of various government entities that are working together to achieve the national objective of building a healthy, happy and productive society by raising awareness of the impact of physical activity on health and well-being,” Sheikh Hamdan said.
Chairman of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, President of the National Olympic Committee and President of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Awards HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum today launched the ‘Hamdan bin Mohammed Initiative for Community Sports’ and unveiled its logo.
Sheikh Ahmed also witnessed the signing of the launch agreement by the Directors of the participating departments and government entities, which include Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Police, Dubai Municipality, Road and Transport Authority, Health Authority, Knowledge Authority, Civil Defense, Community Development Authority, Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs and Dubai Media Incorporated.
Sheikh Ahmed also visited the premises of the initiative, the headquarters of the Dubai Sports Council, and the ‘Hamdan bin Mohammed Initiative for Community Sports Club’, which was launched in cooperation with ADIDAS.
Deputy Chairman of Dubai Sports Council Mater Al-Tayer said that the percentage of people exercising regularly in Dubai grew from 34% to 43% following the implementation of ‘Dubai Pulse’ along with a number of community sports initiatives.
The ‘Hamdan bin Mohammed Initiative for Community Sports’ has six main components including: strategic partnership between departments and entities, community sports events in Dubai featuring over 80 events such as jogging, swimming and biking in various areas of Dubai.
The initiative also includes the Fitness Bus and the Dubai Fitness Index, which will be launched in 2018.
A key objective of the initiative is to encourage people to practise sport, and adopt it as a lifestyle. It also aims to raise Dubai’s profile as a modern city where a high percentage of residents practise sport, and to fight unhealthy habits such as smoking and chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
The initiative will have ambassadors representing various sectors of society. Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director General of Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) Dr. Abdulla Al Karam and Coach of UAE National football team Mahdi Ali will represent the category of staff and workers, Paralympic champion Mohammed Khamis will represent the category of disabled, and ex-international football player Mohammed Al-Kous will represent the category of retired. Ahmed Khalil, named best football player in Asia, will represent the category of youth, and Amina Ahmed will represent the category of family and children.
