Dubai Chamber workshop focuses on legal aspects of commercial agencies

Promoting awareness of the legal aspects of doing business in Dubai with particular emphasis on the legal aspects of registered and non-registered commercial agencies, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with Al Tamimi & Co, organised, “Commercial Agencies in the UAE” workshop at the Chamber premises on Thursday.

The workshop, which was attended by Dubai Chamber members, business representatives, lawyers and legal professionals, general managers, business owners and corporate counsels, provided an understanding of the impact of UAE laws on various types of commercial agency arrangements in the UAE.

Conducted by Marcus Wallman, Partner, and Robert Roberts, Associate, Commercial Advisory, Al Tamimi & Co, the workshop highlighted the types of agency, distribution and representative arrangements that are not subject to the UAE Commercial Agencies Law while providing tips essential for those considering entering into commercial agency arrangements.

Jehad Kazim, Director, Legal Services, Dubai Chamber, stressed that Commercial Agencies are an important part of the international trade system and a vital element of Dubai’s business community. The operations of commercial agencies help activate Dubai’s economy and encourage competitiveness so it is important that they are fully supported.

“This workshop provided practical tips and discussed the legal issues related to commercial agencies and how relevant UAE laws impact these arrangements for new entrants as well as those already operating commercial agencies to avoid future pitfalls in their trading activities,” she said.

On his part, Marcus Wallman, Partner, Commercial Advisory, Al Tamimi & Co, said: “Commercial agency arrangements have always been, and remain, an extremely important part of the UAE’s economy.  It is crucial for any business looking to enter into such a relationship, whether as principal or agent, to be fully aware of the UAE law issues that they will be faced with.

“Many disputes that we have been required to advice on may well have been avoided had the parties had a better understanding of the impact of UAE laws applicable to such relationships at the outset.  We are delighted to again be given the opportunity by the Dubai Chamber to present an overview of the key legal issues arising in relation to such arrangements,” said Wallman.

Dubai Chamber regularly organises trainings, seminars and workshops to apprise the business community with the various trade legislations, laws and rights as part of its efforts to serve the business community which ultimately go on to boost their trade and contribute to the economic growth of Dubai.
