Dubai Customs has partnered in an exciting and fruitful venture with Global Innovation Magazine to produce a special edition entirely focused on Dubai, highlighting the Emirate’s astounding world class achievements in the realm of innovation.
This May 2016, the magazine for the first time focused on one particular geographical area, Dubai. Sponsored by Dubai Customs, the magazine travelled to Dubai to interview some of the region’s prime leaders and innovators both in Government and business sectors.
This special edition features interviews with some of those who have been at the forefront driving innovation not only here in Dubai but also elsewhere in the world, including an inspiring interview with Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DP World and Chairman of Ports, Customs & Free Zone Corporation (PCFC).
Bin Sulayem lets the reader into the secret behind Dubai’s success as a global leader of innovation. For him, the secret lies in the city’s ability to do things anew. He believes that the catalyst to getting things done, driving change and harnessing the power of innovation is nowhere more at play than in central government, under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
The DP World CEO & Chairman and Chairman of PCFC asserts that on the other side of the equation there is “an amazing art of listening” to individuals’ opinions and encouraging people to find new ways, to come up with innovative ideas. “This is the most effective way to driving innovation,” he says.
Commenting on the fresh release of Global Innovation’s Dubai special edition, James O’Flynn, founder of the online magazine, said “This is something we have been wanting to do for some time now; Dubai is an area rich in innovation and is known for trying to achieve the impossible. What was enlightening is how innovation is ingrained into the approach of the Government that actively encourages innovation, not only from its employees but from the other organisations it works so closely with”.
The special issue of the digital innovation-oriented magazine also talked to Rania Rostom, Chief Innovation and Communications Officer for GE in the Middle East, North Africa & Turkey; Katherine Manuel, Senior Vice President, Innovation at Thomson Reuters and Gautam Jain, Head of Strategic Planning & Operations, MENA Innovation Lab; David Horton, Head of Innovation at Synechron; and Tariq Syed, a Business Consultant and Lean Development Manager at Innovation 360.
Besides some very informative articles focusing on the innovation outcomes at DP World and Dubai Customs, the edition also brings into focus women in business, and women leaders with Sacha Fitch and Veronica Munro, two of Dubai’s leading female development professionals.
The Dubai issue gives readers new to the area a good overview of both Government initiatives, as well as the innovation work of the more established organisations like Dubai Customs, DP World, Thomson Reuters and GE. However, one thing that www.globalinnovationmagazine.com prides itself on is highlighting the work of the cutting edge start-ups, introducing its readers to companies you may never have heard of.
The issue has created a lot of interest from around the world. James O’Flynn said “What struck me whilst in Dubai was the sheer amount of innovation focused activity that was occurring, and we have had readers from other regions stating how much they enjoyed the focus on Dubai. I hope we can continue to highlight the activities from Dubai and the UAE, there’s so much more to explore”.
