Dubai Chamber promotes reading and corporate volunteering

As part of the Dubai Chamber’s Give and Gain Day corporate volunteering program, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry joined with Action Care to promote the Year of Reading by donating over 100 books to the National Charity School and helping over 100 of their students to read.

A Dubai Chamber staff delegation visited the school on Tuesday and spent several hours assisting students to read and make reading a hobby, explained Essa Al Zaabi, Senior Vice-President, Institutional Support Sector, Dubai Chamber.

“This visit allowed our staff to build the confidence of students and encourage them to read regularly as part of the Chamber’s support to the Year of Reading. We regularly encourage our employees to give back to the community through volunteering and supporting important social causes,” said Al Zaabi.

He added that this event was just one of several other events that the Chamber organised with its members to promote the Year of Reading and encourage businesses to support various social causes. Such corporate volunteering benefits organisations too by developing staff skills and confidence, enhancing happiness and improving performance.

On her part, Cherryn Kelly, General Manager, Action Care, added: “In support of the UAE Reading Year, Action Care has initiated reading tutoring and literacy building programmes for students at the National Charity School. Action Care endeavours to empower the next generation of young readers by channelling the power of volunteers to provide children with enriching reading experiences that can ignite a lifelong passion for reading.”

Set up in November 2008 by the Centre for Responsible Business, ENGAGE Dubai is an international programme in cooperation with the London-based Business in the Community (BITC). This first of its kind community volunteering programme in the Middle East region, brings together businesses and community organisations around in Dubai to increase the quality and amount of employee community engagement in their local communities. It has 106 corporate members and 39 community partners, supporting on different community projects.
