Dubai Customs Director Inaugurates ’Employees Happiness Meter’

The newly launched initiative confirms Dubai Customs commitment to enhancing employee happiness, in pursuance of the globally inspiring words of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, when he said: "Happiness in our nation is not a wish .. but there will be plans, projects and programs and indicators .. and it will be part of the work of all our ministries .. and a part of our way of life."

Ahmed Obeid Al Falasi, Executive Director of Human Resources, Finance and Administration Division and Lubna Al Muhairi, HR Director, briefed HE Ahmed Mahboob Musabih on this initiative. “The new scheme will kick off with a pilot monthly survey – which will later function on a daily basis – being sent to employees’ mobile phones in order to measure their levels of happiness at work,” said Al Muhairi.

HE Ahmed Mahboob Musabih was the first to provide his happiness feedback on the system. He praised this pioneering initiative alongside the wide array of DC ‘s Human Resources Department undertakings designed and executed to ensure employees’ happiness.

The Director of Dubai Customs emphasised DC’s approach in viewing its human capital as the true asset for thriving in actuating the strategic goals of the country, and in interpreting the wise leadership decrees in establishing prosperity and happiness for the UAE nationals, residents and visitors alike.

“We are blessed to have a farsighted wise leadership that doesn’t compromise when it comes to achievement at all levels. The creation of a new ministerial post of Happiness Minister is by far attributed as a giant leap in government work globally, upholding the mission of ensuring the proper alignment and synergy of the country’s plans, programs and policies to promote people’s wellbeing and happiness,”  Musabih said.

Ahmed Mahboob further added that “The Happiness Meter is the fruit of our unshaken belief that employees’ happiness is the cornerstone for better work productivity and is directly cascaded upon our clients’ happiness in a viral stream of positiveness.”

Expressing his gratitude for DC cadres while commending their loyalty, Ahmed Mahboob also asked staff to maintain and nurture the one team spirit  and the optimal utilization of DC’s colossal  resources to fulfil the wise leadership’s vision of advancing to the world’s forefront in all arenas.

Musabih also hailed the evident efforts of DC Senior Management, Department Directors and Section Managers for harnessing goodwill initiatives and fostering a healthy working environment for their personnel. Such management support  proved to be very effective as it saw employee satisfaction rising up to 86% in 2014, besides achieving a huge leap from the 20th rank on the medium sized government entities level in 2013 up to the 10th in one year, as per the employees satisfaction survey conducted by Dubai Executive Council – Dubai Government Excellence Program.

According to Al Falasi, the feedback that will be gathered through this measurement tool on a monthly basis will give the DC’s senior management a broader perspective for better decision making. This is also an effective tool for the HR Department to better calibrate current initiatives and instigate a  fresh real-time feedback to help improve on employees’ services.

“The introduced Happiness Meter is designed in accordance with DC corporate governance standards, ensuring transparency and neutrality, as employees can share their degrees of satisfaction at work  via their own mobile phones using a three-level scale of Happy, Neutral, and Unhappy,” explained AL Muhairi.
