Sheikh Mohammed’s remarks came during the launch of the UN High-Level Panel report on Humanitarian Financing to the United Nations’ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The report explores solutions to the increasing numbers of people in need of assistance and the insufficient resources. It also gives recommendations to close the widening gap between rising humanitarian needs and available resources.
Thanking the United Nations and its secretary-general for launching the report in the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed stressed that the UAE will continue to establish itself as a global humanitarian capital.
Sheikh Mohammed thanked Mr Ban for his sincere efforts in serving just international issues and expressed appreciation for the UN's initiative to launch the international report in Dubai.
"This move shows that the international community has confidence in our state and its international humanitarian efforts in particular," Sheikh Mohammed said.
"Joint international humanitarian action should be boosted to bridge the global shortfall in humanitarian assistance by improving the efficiency of humanitarian work, involving the private sector and establishing good governance in countries in need of assistance," he added.
For his part, United Nations’ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hailed the UAE’s generous support for international humanitarian causes, commending the the country’s role in this regards.
He said according to the new report, the world needs to spend an additional $15 billion (AED 55 billion) a year to help victims of conflicts and natural disasters.
Ban Ki-moon added the report says that the current annual spend on life-saving assistance amount to $25 billion (AED 92 billion), however, that’s not enough to help the growing number of people in need of aid.
Speaking on the refugee crisis, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, HRH Princess Haya bint Al Hussein said the world must work jointly to help alleviate the plight of more than 50 million refugees.
HRH Princess Haya added that the UN report shows that about 125 million people around the world lack basic amenities such as food, clean water, health and education services, social empowerment and personal security.
She added that countries’ governments and development organizations should take bold and decisive measures to tackle these problems.
