H.E Eng. Ahmad Mohamed Shareef, Undersecretary of the Department of Municipal Affairs, signs the declaration of interest of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group

The Department of Municipal Affairs, Abu Dhabi has pledged their support to become one of the founding members of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group. This is an unprecedented initiative for the government of Abu Dhabi. By joining this group, the Department of Municipal Affairs is demonstrating their support of the Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi’s efforts in the establishment and implementation of a sustainable environment and sustainable development in the Emirate. The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group, established by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, is the first of its kind at the level of public sector institutions in the Arab world and the region. H.E Eng. Ahmad Mohamed Shareef, Undersecretary of the Department of Municipal Affairs, explains: "We are committed to supporting H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s vision of environmental sustainability and protection. DMA is focused on improving services and supporting sustainable development. In fact, several DMA representatives recently returned from the World Cities Summit in Singapore where they met with officials to exchange ideas and learn more about current best practices in sustainable waste management that are currently in place in Singapore, a city that has faced similar challenges and opportunities that Abu Dhabi is presently experiencing. DMA is dedicated to helping EAD to achieve excellence in the protection of our most valued resource, our environment." The newly formed Department joins 14 additional establishments and companies supporting the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group, including Dolphin Energy, ALDAR Properties, Emirates Foundation, Sorouh Real Estate, ADNOC, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, ADWEA, Health Authority Abu Dhabi, The Higher Corporation for specialized industrial zones, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Department of Planning and Economy, and the Department of Transportation. The group will release annual sustainability reports, participate in quarterly meetings and semi-annual environmental forums to exchange experiences, establish goals, and identify training courses on practical considerations of sustainability. Over the next two days officials from all partnering establishments and companies will be participating in workshops presented by EAD.
