Emirates Photography Competition Invites Submission Of Works

Under the patronage of International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) the Abu Dhabi Tourism ’&’ Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) is organizing the Seventh Session of the Emirates Photography Competition (EPC) 2012.

The aim of the EPC is to develop photography within the United Arab Emirates by attracting as many photographers as possible, whether amateur or professional, by nurturing their talents.

EPC intends to achieve this through specialized workshops, interactive meetings, seminars and holding both solo and collective exhibitions inside and outside the country. The EPC also encourages the comprehensive acquisition and publication of photographic works.

Being one of the most renowned photographic events in the Middle East, the EPC invites the submission of outstanding works of different artistic styles. However, all participating works must respect performance values and standards of photographic art, as well as FIAP rules.

In each annual session, the EPC has a "Main Theme" that encourages photographers to explore untapped potential. There are also four additional themes that may vary from one year to the next. To encourage young talent there is also special category for them to showcase their work.

This year, EPC celebrates the Iraqi photographer Murad Al-Daghistani (1917-1982), who was a leading photographer in the contemporary Arab photography. Daghistani’s works captures both the everyday life of his subjects as well some creative portraits of the people he encountered. Throughout his photography career he brought together a modernist view of the world, and captured the cultural values of those around him reflecting the beginning of contemporary Arab photography.

The Seventh Session’s ?Cultural Reflections’ theme focuses on Daghistani’s works and is a tribute to the importance of his research and study of photography.

EPC is also pleased to announce the continuation of the Noor Ali Rashed Award, which is an annual award be given to the best Emirati photographer of 2012 for works that highlight local environmental and cultural symbols of the UAE through participation in different themes of the Competition.

Noor Ali Rashed (1929 - 2010) was one of the leading figures in the art of photography in the UAE, who through his photography, contributed to the documentation of the life within UAE society, and its ruling families.

EPC will also continue to give an award for the best collection of photographs from participants living in the Arab world. A FIAP Gold Medal will be given to each of the best five authors participating in the Seventh Session. There will also be an award for the best five groups from international photography associations and clubs in recognition of the supporting role that clubs play in developing the cultural movement of photography.

For the first time, an award for "Fine Arts in Photography" is being launched. This Award consists of three gold medals that will be awarded for the best works that present modern innovative ideas that contribute to developing photography.

The EPC’s Seventh Edition will be open to all photographers from around the world.
