Students From Government And Private Schools In Abu Dhabi And The UAE With An Interest In Robotics Have Been Invited To Participate In This Years Competition

The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) will host and conduct the third ‘UAE National Robot Olympiad’ (UNRO) - an annual robotics competition for middle and high-school students on October 13, 2008 at the Al Mawaheb Model School for Girls in Abu Dhabi. Students from government and private schools in Abu Dhabi and the UAE with an interest in robotics have been invited to participate in this year’s competition. Edutech Middle East, a leading provider of technology-enabled knowledge solutions, and LEGO Education, the leading manufacturer and supplier of robotic solutions, have joined hands as partners of the event. H.E. Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al-Khaili, Director General of ADEC and ASF Karim, CEO, Edutech Middle East met yesterday to discuss final arrangements for the competition. “ADEC is very proud to host and conduct this excellent academic-based initiative. The Robot Olympiad is a valuable means to get students to consider the study of science and technology as a career and to produce valuable inventions that will benefit our society,” said Dr Mugheer. The winning teams from this competition will be sent to the ‘World Robot Olympiad 2008’ (WRO) - the international robotics championship for the Asia-Pacific region, which is being held in Yokohama, Japan. The competition is under two categories: the Regular Category for High Schools, which has a theme ‘Recycle Keeper’, and the Open Category, where the theme will be ‘Saving Global Environment’. The event is expected to draw in young aspiring scientists and technologists with creative skills in robotics for a friendly competition with their peers, with aims of advancing robotics technology within the academic community and among the younger population. During the competition, teams will be instructed to solve basic problems within a specified time using a set of standard mechanical parts. Each group will be judged based on their innovativeness, creativity and technological abilities in resolving a set of problems set by the World Robot Olympiad. The team garnering the highest points will be sent to compete at the WRO from October 31 - November 2, 2008. “The outstanding success of previous editions of the ‘UAE National Robot Olympiad’ has inspired us to continue to support this initiative,” said ASF Karim. “With the great competition put up by the competing schools last year, we are definitely in for another exciting contest this year. We would like to commend the Abu Dhabi Education Council for undertaking this meaningful project, which will support and promote sciences in our schools.”
