Hailing from across the UAE, the visions of five up-and-coming Emirati artists will assemble together tomorrow, Thursday 13th of May, as Maraya Art Centre presents “Experiment”—a month long exhibition celebrating all the unconventional and courageous experiments of multimedia artists living in the region. Running from May 13 – June 26, the showcase builds a holistic backdrop of space and light where featured artists can share their personal interpretations of contemporary design while connecting with both a regional and international audience.
Alaa Edirs, Alia Lootah, Reem Lootah, Sheikha Al Mazrou and Khalid Abdulla are the masterminds behind this month’s showcase.
“Experiment” was first envisioned in the summer of 2009 by two curators who lived and worked in the UAE with the premise of creating a platform for young artists to explore new frontiers in free-form multimedia design. The project has no borders and no specific guidelines, welcoming contributions created in new places and inventive spaces.
“Al Qasba has always been a place of intellectual discovery and artistic expression, and hosting exhibitions like ‘Experiment’ at Maraya Art Centre is a chance for visitors and residents to get a real flavour of the local art scene,” comments Hazem Al Sawaf, Director of Sales and Marketing at Al Qasba Development Authority. “There is an incredible amount of energy and public enthusiasm surrounding these events, so for young artists in particular, the exposure can really open up a lot of new doors.”
The audience will be dazzled by the works of the five young Emirati artists who share the creativity and passion for arts. Alaa Edris is a graduate of Fine Arts with a concentration in Electronic Media, using human faces as her most recent inspiration. The works of Alia Lootah deal with the relationship between digital images and their translation into the medium of painting. Incorporating various aspects of photography, film, animation and graphic design, Reem Lootah will also grace the exhibit with her latest pieces. Khalid Abdulla uses repetition and mirroring to construct elaborate patterns in his artwork, manipulating items like electric toys and digitally altering Islamic patterns. Brought up in Sharjah, Shaikha Al Mazrou is a fresh name to the local art scene, using old electronic gadgets as a non-traditional medium from which to create fascinating multimedia figures.
The curators of the exhibition—Giuseppe Moscatello and Noor Al Suwaidi—met several years ago and decided to work together in setting up the foundations for “Experiment”. Both individuals have spent years studying Fine Arts and working in collaboration with international partners in showcasing their Mediterranean and Middle Eastern styles within a modern context.
The inauguration of the exhibition will take place tomorrow, Thursday 13th of May at 7:00 pm and will run daily until June 26 from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. For more information, please log on to www.alqasba.ae
