Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recently organised the Suppliers Reading Day, at the ‘Reading is a Positive Energy’ tent, located at Zabeel Park, Dubai. This is in adherence with the directives of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, who declared 2016 as the Year of Reading, as approved by the UAE Cabinet under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The event witnessed the participation of over 100 of DEWA’s suppliers, along with their children and families.
“As part of efforts to achieve the vision of the wise leadership, to transform the UAE into an international hub for culture knowledge, we work to build a knowledge based community through initiatives, and by providing a national comprehensive programme, to develop a generation of Emiratis that take pride in reading and knowledge,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“As a socially-responsible government organisation, DEWA cooperates with the public and private sectors to establish a knowledge-based environment. Reading and knowledge are two of the most important elements of development in the community. This supports our objectives to raise a generation with a passion for culture, reading, and knowledge, across society. DEWA’s knowledge centres contain thousands of paper, digital books and resources in different areas. DEWA opens its libraries to students to instil a habit of reading in the younger generation. DEWA also cooperates with Al Bayan newspaper in issuing the cultural weekly supplement. Reading opens the mind and is a habit shared by successful people around the world,” added Al Tayer.
Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA, reiterated DEWA’s commitment towards encouraging reading as part of its work. “DEWA encourages all stakeholders to make reading a lifestyle throughout the year, to change the status of reading in UAE society by 2026 and make it a way of life. DEWA also encourages all community members to discover the fortune of knowledge in books, so we are pleased to support our suppliers through this initiative,” said Al Akraf.
DEWA launched the year-long Reading is Positive Energy exhibition in collaboration with Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation. The exhibition features different cultural and knowledge corners and sections. These include a permanent book exhibition, the Reading is Positive Energy Forum, Children’s Knowledge World, Smart Reading Corner, Reading Sensory Wall, Emirati Majlis, and a cultural café.
