Dubai Police wins Best HR Strategy Overseas award

The General Department of Smart Services at Dubai Police has won "Best HR Strategy Overseas" award at the HR Excellence awards 2016 in London.

Like all police forces, Dubai Police faces the training challenge of wanting to up-skill officers in an environment that is both safe and practical. However, when officers might have to deal with everything from traffic accidents to hostage situations, what is the solution?

In a move HR Excellence Awards judges described as “brilliant” and “innovative’, Dubai Police has embraced cutting-edge videogame technology to create virtual incidents, developing its training programme and all related technology entirely in-house.

The police force understood that passive learning had many limitations for training its frontline officers, and so the learning team undertook an evidence review to explore the alternatives. Hitting on virtual training technology as the solution, a traffic accident investigators simulation was built in-house and rigorously tested. Its success promoted the extension of the format into crime scenes, SWAT and body language. All virtual training is available on PCs in training halls and on smart mobile devices.

The training products are closely tied to Dubai Police’s four strategic goals and range across 10 different topics, servicing most of 20 general departments, with impressive results. In crime-scene investigations, those investigators who were trained using the virtual environments performed better in real-life cases by an average of 57%.

HR Excellence Awards judges were impressed that Dubai Police developed this suite of tools in-house, praising it for being “fresh” and a “great use of simulation”.
