Community awareness of the law’s items is essential to protect children from abuse and negligence
A discussion panel held today at Rashida Majlis (a community center belongs to the Community Development Authority in Dubai (CDA), discussed in details the items of the recently issued Child Protection Law. Organised by CDA and attended by five key stakeholders’ representatives, the panel explained to guests and media the objectives of the law and how the law enforcement will be when starting next June.
Headed by HE Khaled Al Kamda, Director General of CDA, and managed by Dr. Abdelaziz Al Hammadi, Director of the Family Cohesion Department in CDA, the panel hosted Ms. Moza Shoumi, Member of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, HE Judge Dr. Jassim Al-Hosni, the First Judge of Appeal in Dubai Courts, Major Dana Marzouki, Acting Director of the Child Protection Department of the Ministry of the Interior, Dr. Hussein Al Masih, Expert in the Sector of Development and Social Welfare in CDA, and Ms. Aisha Sultan, writer and media expert.
HE Al Kamda said that CDA is heavily concerned in child rights protection; the authority has been working intensively during the past five years to increase the social awareness of child rights that are stated in the international agreements. Al Kamda said that the new law will give important support to the plans and programs for child protection and would allow legal reference that should direct all actions to what is better for the children.
“This panel is a kind of preparation for the law enforcement stage, we want to assure that all the stakeholders as well as the public are on the same page and well aware of the law’s spirit before it enters action”. Al Kamda added.
Representatives of more than 24 government authorities attended the discussion panel to learn more about the Law 3 for the year 2016 for child protection (originally named Wadeema’s Law), the panel discussed the main five areas tackled by the law which are the social, the legal, the security, the psychological and the media.
Dr. Abdelaziz Al Hammadi said; “the enforcement of this law will make a quantum leap in how to deal with child protection issues in the UAE. It is necessary in order to achieve the desired benefits of it to spread the awareness among all the community sectors either directly involved in child protection or indirectly. We are planning to have a series of discussion panels with different groups and this is the first one”.
The UAE Cabinet is expected to issue the Implementing Regulations for the law after six months from the issuing day, and it will enter work officially from mid of next June.
