DEWA Successful participation in World Government Summit

“We are pleased to take part and sponsorship the World Government Summit, which has become the most prominent event on the world government agenda. The visions and theories shared at the summit are considered references for world governments in shaping the future, thanks to the wise vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. I would like to thank the World Government Summit and those involved in it, for their considerable efforts, and for providing DEWA with the opportunity to be part of this success and share our experiences with the world. We support the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum that the World Government Summit has is a platform that highlights successful government experiences, and exchange of exceptional government accomplishments, to enhance the readiness of governments to face the challenges of the future. The Summit is a key developmental and knowledge contribution by the UAE to the world,” said Al Tayer.

DEWA’s participation in this year’s World Government Summit was very fruitful, with key meetings and agreement signings. Al Tayer met Greg Hunt MP, Australian Minister for the Environment and Acting Minister for Cities and the Built Environment, who received Best Minister in the World Award at the summit. The meeting discussed bilateral relations and mutual cooperation and exchanging of best practices and experiences in areas related to protecting the environment and promoting sustainability. Al Tayer shared Dubai’s experience in protecting the environment, which supports the Dubai Plan 2021 to make the Emirate sustainable with its resources, whose environmental resources are clean, healthy, and sustainable.

DEWA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to promote cooperation in exchanging knowledge and expertise, development of solutions and applications, and enhancing innovation. This is part of DEWA’s efforts to use state-of-the-art technologies in all its operations to achieve the Smart Dubai initiative, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to transform the Emirate into the smartest city in the world. It also contributes to achieving DEWA’s vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility.

Al Tayer and Joe Kaeser, President and CEO of Siemens AG participated in a plenary session titled ‘How Clean Tech is shaping the Future of Energy’ moderated by John Defterios, CNN’s Emerging Markets Editor. Al Tayer noted that DEWA adopts a holistic approach for energy that focuses on energy security by diversifying its resources, using the latest technologies in energy storage, and increasing efficiency in the production, transmission, and distribution of electricity and water. DEWA builds the smart grid in its broad and integrated sense, which covers generation, transmission and distribution systems. The smart grid will include demand side management, asset management, automation, transfer stations, automation of distribution networks and the integration of systems and smart meters. This has contributed to DEWA achieving better results in energy efficiency than its counterparts in Europe and the UAE.

Al Tayer earlier met with the President and CEO of Siemens, to discuss cooperation between DEWA and the Group, especially in energy technologies and production solutions, training, and capacity building. Kaeser noted that Siemens and DEWA have been closely cooperating for many years in different areas, to create a sustainable energy ecosystem to drive innovation in line with Dubai's vision.

“DEWA is committed to building strategic relationships with local, regional, and international organisations to provide excellent infrastructure and meet the increasing energy demands of the Emirate. This supports DEWA’s vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility. Our strategy is to provide electricity and water services at the highest standards of availability, reliability, and efficiency,” said Al Tayer.

Al Tayer also met with a high-level delegation from Électricité de France SA (EDF, Electricity of France) headed by Antoine Cahuzac, CEO of EDF EN. The two sides discussed developing cooperation and strategic partnerships, especially in Research & Development (R&D). The parties agreed on programmes to exchange expertise and to train DEWA staff in EDF’s R&D centres.

At the World Government Summit, DEWA shared its experience in increasing use of renewable energy. This includes the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is the largest single-site solar energy project in the world, based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. The park will produce 1,000 megawatts (MW) by 2020 and 5,000 MW by 2030 with a total investment of AED50 billion. It will reduce approximately 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

In addition to the park, DEWA presented Shams Dubai, which encourages building owners to install photovoltaic panels to generate electricity, and the Green Charger initiative to build the infrastructure and electric vehicle charging stations.
