The UAE National Seismic Network, an affiliate of the UAE National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology today detected an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, the epicentre of which was the Iranian Island of Qeshm in the Arabian Gulf.
Tremors from the earthquake were strongly felt in the UAE, particularly in the Northern emirates but more lightly in Abu Dhabi. Aftershocks from the earthquake which occurred at 3:00 pm were later felt at 3:33pm, measuring 4.8 On the Richter scale.
In a statement, the UAE National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology assured the public that these seismic activities in the Iranian area of Qeshm do not constitute any credible threat to the UAE.
"Apart from ripples from the earthquake which we have seen, there is no substantial danger", said the statement.
