Committed to international reach and seeking continuously to contribute in events that work on developing the UAE Telecom Sector, the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) is hosting the Working Party 5D (WP 5D) Meeting on the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000), with the Radio-communication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R); with the active participation of «du» – one of the telecom services providers in the UAE – as the main sponsor of the Meeting, which will take place on 24 June – 1 July 2008, at Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre.
In this respect, Eng. Nasser Bin Hammad, Manager of International Affairs at the TRA and the General Coordinator of the WP 5D Meeting, said: “The WP 5D is the lead group at the ITU for the overall maintenance of existing and development of new Recommendations on IMT-2000, also known as the Third Generation Mobile Systems, and beyond. This activity also involves liaison with ITU Telecom Standardization (ITU-T) on network-related standardization activities of IMT-2000, and with ITU Development (ITU-D) in relation to the application of IMT-2000 in developing countries; that is because of the importance of such studies on the national level for the countries using this system, as well as on the global level. The Word Radio-communication Conference 2007 that took place at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva with the participation of the TRA, issued a number of procedures and directives that organize the work of these systems, along with international obligatory regulations to all the countries interested in adopting this system nationally in accordance to the spectrum availability of each country.”
To this end, H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Board Member & Director General, said: “The UAE hosting the WP 5D represented by the TRA reflects the TRA contribution in establishing the role of the UAE in supporting the telecom sector regionally and internationally. However, it is the first time that this party’s international meeting takes place in an Arab country, demonstrating the UAE commitment to supporting the ITU events and activities, which the UAE has joined in 1972 and was elected to its Council in 2006. In addition to the TRA strategy to enhance the global statues of the UAE in the international organizations specialized in organizing and regulating the telecom sector.”

It is expected for this meeting to reach a mutual understanding among the participants on the requirements of spectrum, on the studies of the market situation, and on the future development of IMT-2000 and the Third Generation Systems,” concluded Mr. Al Ghanim.
